SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2020   NOON TO 1:00 PM,

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, August 1, 2020, noon to 1 P.M. with the theme RACING TO RUIN:  NO NEW NUCLEAR ARMS RACE.  The vigil will be held at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave, Carbondale.  This August is the 75th anniversary of the first use of nuclear weapons, on Hiroshima and then Nagasaki, by the United States.  Recent US government actions to increase funding for nuclear weaponry and withdraw from arms control treaties threaten a new nuclear arms race.

The event will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines.  Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own.  The monthly meeting will follow, please bring a chair and a drink for a physically distanced meeting in the shade.

ZOOM WEBINAR AND HIROSHIMA/NAGASAKI COMMEMORATION
SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2020    6:30 PM  (SEE BELOW FOR ZOOM SIGN-ON)

A ZOOM Webinar and Hiroshima/Nagasaki Commemoration will take place on Sunday, August 9 at 6:30pm.  “RACING TO RUIN:  THE CONSEQUENCES OF RESUMPTION OF NUCLEAR ARMS RACE”   will be presented by Haig Hovaness, a retired information technology consultant and active member of the Green Party Peace Action Committee with a special interest in the dangers of nuclear war.
Recent US government actions to increase funding for nuclear weaponry and withdraw from arms control treaties threaten a new nuclear arms race. This presentation will explore the serious consequences of such an arms race, detailing the economic impact of the potential expenditures and the security risks resulting from abandonment of arms control treaties and the introduction of new types of weapons.
The growing risk of catastrophic war will be explained through plausible conflict scenarios and historic precedents. The presentation concludes with recommendations for averting a renewed arms race.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A opportunity and a brief Commemoration. The event is sponsored by the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois and the Shawnee Green Party.
