MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL: END THE FOREVER WARS! REPEAL THE AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE!

MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL, SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2021   NOON TO 1:00 PM, CORNER OF MAIN AND ILLINOIS AVE, CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS
Win Without War tells us that going to war is supposed to be hard, and according to the U.S. Constitution, the decision should rest solely with Congress. But for 20 years, president after president have used post-9/11 congressional Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF) as a blank check to turn the world into a battlefield.
Like when President Obama claimed the 2002 AUMF — the original law that authorized the 2003 disastrous invasion of Iraq — as the basis for fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Trump used it last year to assassinate Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. It is beyond time to end our nation’s forever wars. In 2019 and 2020, the House voted several times to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). Unfortunately, these measures were not considered in the Senate. Congress can, and must, reaffirm its constitutional duties and reclaim the power to declare war from an overreaching executive branch.
H.R. 256 is Rep. Barbara Lee’s legislation to repeal the 2002 AUMF, to ensure this 19-year-old law cannot be misused by this or any future president. Repealing the 2002 AUMF is a necessary first step to ending our nation’s endless wars.
The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines.  Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own.  The monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on April 21, 6pm.  For information about joining, email <georgeannhartzog@gmail.com>
