MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2021 NOON TO 1:00 PM

SAY NO TO THROWING MONEY AT THE WAR MACHINE                     https://www.facebook.com/events/502671854491353/

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, June 5, 2021, noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.

At an eye-popping $753 BILLION, President Biden’s just-released FY2022 Pentagon budget is an increase on even Trump’s highest levels.   The Biden Administration is using China as the major justification for this massive increase, framing China as a danger to the U.S. and its allies.  As former President Jimmy Carter stated, “While the U.S. has been at war for 20 years, China has instead invested in 21st century infrastructure and in its own people, lifting 800 million of them out of poverty.”
He's right: if we’re going to address the crisis of poverty and injustice in our country, we can’t continue to hurl money at the for-profit war industry that's gearing up for war with China. This enormous corporate grab bag for military contractors includes:
*At least $30 billion for new nuclear weapons slated to cost $1.7 trillion over the next decades
*$17.4 billion for an unnecessary Space Force
*Billions for the F-35 fighter jet, a boondoggle with an eventual $1-2 trillion price tag
*At least $51 billion to maintain over 800 overseas bases and establish new ones in the Indo-Pacific region.
*The U.S. is still arming Israel with a new $735M weapons sale approved by the Biden Administration.
The top 5 weapons contractors raked in $150 billion in Pentagon contracts in 2020. That could have meant 10 years of wind power for 25 million households; 11 days of military spending could end homelessness.  It is time to reject militarism and begin to prioritize human and planet needs.
The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines.  Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own.  The monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on June 16, 6pm.  For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
